Project story

The project for VuFold in Macclesfield was for a retail fit out and Cat B fit out of the core shell. Part way through the completion of the build the main contractor went into administration, and we undertook the completion of the Cat A shell works including: Dry lining, screed, plaster finishes, electrical, mechanical, ventilation, partitioning, joinery to enable us to start the fit out

Design Concept and Inspiration:  was the building’s distinctive architecture, featuring a triangular jutting steel cladding detail with an external balcony. The internal space was angled like a squeezed trapezium and the roof to 1st floor was pitched into the gable.  The unique footprint and angled soffits added to the building’s architectural appeal in conjunction with the extensive display of products made the internal design & fit out an exciting jigsaw puzzle and poser for our team of Creators + Makers. The finishes were carefully selected, use of an earthy palette and natural timber, fabrics, wool boucle, and rugs to give an organic backdrop to the main show, the Products

Scope of Works: this commercial interior design project’s scope encompassed both Cat A (basic building finishes) and Cat B (interior fit-out) works. Bespoke joinery, partitions, lighting, mechanical, sanitaryware, flooring, decoration, bespoke displays,  signage and wayfinding

Vision and Mission: VuFold founders John, Elizabeth & Rick Collins’s mission is to service B to C, with their own manufacturing facilities and extensive supply chain to service both Trade and Retail clients with internal and external doors and windows.

The range and scope of their offering is displayed in the new showroom as illustrated. The design was led by and considered the customer journey, it required a strategic and thoughtful approach to layout, ambiance, and client interaction with products.

First Impressions: The entrance is visually striking, clean, and open. It’s open vista and set out displays channel clients around the space and showroom products. The displays are designed to provide a snapshot of the total range with each section designed to appeal to client’s often varied requirements. The space is inviting and communicates the brand’s identity through subtle signage, logo and sales literature. There are islands of different products from glazed lanterns to Aluminium windows and doors

Customer Journey Phases as they progress through the space, 1. Awareness: The customer is drawn in by the showroom’s design and visual appeal. 2. Exploration: They begin to explore different zones based on product displays and interaction points. 3. Engagement: The customer interacts with products, tests features, open the doors / windows. 4. Decision Making: As they move through, they start comparing products or asking questions to sales staff.

At the exit is a lounge style soft seating, ambient lighting, and customer consultation area with sales literature and soon to be a film reel on wall mounted screens. The film will illustrate the whole process from enquiry to site visit, then the manufacturing process through to the install team with satisfied clients and a happy handshake!

frequently asked questions

When designing a retail fit out, there are several key factors to consider:

Customer Experience: The design should aim to create a positive and memorable experience for customers, taking into account factors such as lighting, layout, and product display.

Brand Identity: The space should reflect the brand’s identity, values, and aesthetics.

Functionality: The design should be functional and efficient, with effective use of space and storage to maximize sales and minimize operational costs.

Accessibility: The space should be accessible for people with disabilities and easy to navigate for all customers.

Technology: The use of technology, such as digital signage, interactive displays, and point-of-sale systems, should be considered to enhance the customer experience and streamline operations.

Safety and Security: The design should consider the safety and security of customers and staff, including the use of security cameras, emergency lighting, and fire prevention systems.

Sustainability: Consideration should be given to the use of environmentally friendly materials and energy-efficient systems to reduce the environmental impact of the space.

Budget: A realistic budget should be established and considered throughout the design process to ensure that the project remains on track and within budget constraints.

It’s important to work with a professional interior designer or architect to ensure all of these factors are taken into account and to create a well-designed, functional, and attractive retail or leisure space.

The cost of a retail fit out can vary greatly depending on several factors such as the size of the space, the materials used, the location, and the level of customization required. On average, a retail fit out can cost anywhere from £50 to £250 per square foot, although costs can easily run higher for high-end finishes or unique designs. It’s best to get quotes from multiple contractors to get a better understanding of the costs involved.
